Choosing a Living Room Rug – Size Matters
Choosing the right living room rug is one of the most important decisions when creating a balanced and finished interior. The right rug size brings the sofa, armchairs and coffee table together into a clear seating area, while a rug that is too small or incorrectly sized can disrupt the proportions of the entire room.

What Size Rug for a Living Room?
As a general rule, the rug should extend at least under the front legs of the sofa. This visually connects the furniture and creates a calmer, more cohesive look.
- Small living rooms: a well-sized, light-coloured rug makes the space feel larger
- Larger living rooms: a large rug ties the entire seating area together
- L-shaped sofas: a larger rug usually works better than several small ones
In most cases, a slightly larger rug looks better than one that is too small.
Leave Space Around the Rug
Good proportions are created when there is visible floor space around the rug. A recommended distance is about 20–30 cm between the rug and the walls, allowing the rug to frame the room without making it feel cramped.
Shape and Atmosphere in the Living Room
The shape of the rug also affects the overall feel of the space:
- Rectangular rugs are a timeless and safe choice for most living rooms
- Round rugs soften the look and add visual interest
- Large living room rugs create a calm and unified appearance
